MOTOR in the Community: Habitat for Humanity ReStore, United Way Book Fair, Handy Helpers and more

MOTOR employees made their rounds in the local community, giving back and building bridges wherever they could

By Danielle Dompreh

This past May and June, numerous MOTOR employees supported and gave back to their communities. The company made headway this spring starting at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore—a global nonprofit housing organization that has groups working in local communities both nationally and internationally.

The event held in May was MOTOR’s first with the organization and it was a real success with employees coming out to support the cause. Together, they moved, organized, measured and labeled close to 100 doors! The task was not a small one but with teamwork and a self-sacrificing spirit, employees were able to complete the work with smiles on their faces—and that was just the first week!

The following week, MOTOR was proudly represented at the Forgotten Harvest Farm in Trenton, Michigan by ten of its employees. Here, they planted over 18,000 cabbage seedlings, which are expected to produce more than 90,000 lbs. or 45 tons of cabbage to be distributed to food banks later this year.

MOTOR team members finished the month of May with a bang at the United Way Book Fair in Auburn Hills and Detroit, Michigan. Setting up the book fair, helping students choose books and assisting with the checkout process, elementary school students in the two locales left the book fair with heavier bookbags, lighter pockets and a busy imagination.

Marketing Operations Lead and volunteer, Amy Wilson says, “I chose to partake in this effort because I loved the scholastic book fair when I was in school. I thought this would be so much fun and a great way to give back to my community!”

In June, MOTOR employees jogged into the new month as they had the opportunity to participate in the 2023 Detroit Heart and Stroke Walk and 5K through the American Heart Association. The walk is a means to get everyone moving and encourage socialization in the community.

Working as a Content Development Manager and the team coach for the Heart Walk, Larry Posey encouraged all employees with the words, “Be a supporter of critical research. Be a community energizer. Be a champion. Be a lifesaver. You are all of these things because you are a walker.”

Keeping up the momentum, a group of MOTOR volunteers jumped into action to help local senior citizens through the Macomb County (Michigan) Handy Helpers Program. This program launched three years ago to provide local seniors with assistance in completing household maintenance tasks such as pest control, the cleaning of walls, windows, and carpets, faucet repair and more.

With blue skies and yard tools in hand, volunteers all shared a part in sprucing up the homes of six senior citizens in the Handy Helpers Program by weeding, trimming, raking and window washing.

To encourage and support volunteer activities like these, MOTOR provides full-time employees with two paid days off each year to spend with organizations of their choice. Learn more about MOTOR’s benefits and current job postings.
